212 East Grand River LLC

Built in 1848, The Race Street Mill was the first foundry and machine works in Lansing, owned by Turner and Crossman. Between 1857 and 1858, James Richard and James Turner established their own machine shop on the site and later, in 1863 the building was occupied by the planning mill of Walker & Huston and was later returned to a machine shop owned by Cady, Glassbrook and Co., who in 1879 repaired the works which was then run exclusively by water power.

In 1885 it was said, by the Lansing State Journal that, “There was none more important than the machine shop and foundry of the Cady Glassbrook and Co. In 1919, the Journal reported that, it was the oldest standing factory building in the city.” At that time it was again updated to accommodate the Standard Castings Co.

Not much is known about the activity in the building or on the site between 1919 and 1975 when the building was purchased for $10,000 by Jake and Veronica Smeltzer who used the building for their graphic design business. In 1999, the building was purchased by its current owners Harry H. Hepler, Marc Hackett, Kevin Kelly and Jim Epolito, who formed 212 East Grand River LLC, which is now one of the many driving forces in the revitalization of Old Town.
